Mr. George & J's Alley

Hidden away on the mountains of Danshui, this quaint coffee shop is the perfect place to spend an afternoon to relax, work on a laptop, or meet friends. The customer service at Mr. George & J's Alley is easily 5 stars, and they make every customer feel like a member of the family. Great Atmosphere, Great Coffee, and Great Service. They have it all.

Coffee Alley 窩宅

The friendliest cafe' in Taiwan, 窩宅 Coffee Alley is a step above the rest. With a friend and family style atmosphere, Coffee Alley gives you the best in roasted coffee and oven-fresh bakery goods. Everything here is made with a touch of heart and warmth. It's a great place to bring your laptop and spend an afternoon working. Power outlets are freely available, and there's plenty of seating. And it's also a great place to play all the best cards and board games. Did I mention that their cakes are delicious? CostCo Neihu

As one of the busiest CostCo supermarkets in the world, they are always jammed packed with customers. Sometimes it feels more like a subway car during rush hour than a superstore. It's also a fantastic place to get a cheap pizza or hot dog (drink included), which contributes to it's popularity. So, whether it's just browsing the aisles or eating a good meal, it's always a tempting place to go.

Ba Fang Yun Ji Dumpling

A popular Dumpling Franchise in Taiwan, which is located in almost every major city. However, the service is not always steady in every location. This particular shop, though, has fantastic customer service. The owner is friendly, and makes a special effort to make customers feel welcome. My particular favorite is the shrimp dumplings. It's a good meal at a low cost.

Huang Ping - Hong Kong Restaurant (皇品港式茶餐廳)

They have a great duck or chicken rice meal for under $5, and it will fill you up fast. The food is great, and it has a wonderful atmosphere if you feel like meeting with friends. As for the customer service, it is about 50/50 depending on what staff member helps you. However, you really go there for a good Chinese meal at a reasonable price.

MYWarmDay - Cafe and Brunch (MWD)

It is a good place to go eat breakfast in Taipei. The one drawback is that there’s always a long line so it will take about 10 to 15 minutes to get your food. However, they have specials where you can get a chicken sandwich and a hot milk tea for under two dollars. Plus, they have a large seating area so if your friends want to meet for breakfast there’s a very good chance that you can get a table. And most important, especially being a foreigner, they have pictures on their menu which makes it easier to order your food even if you can’t read Chinese.

Subway - Neihu

Probably the best Subway in Taiwan. They actually try hard to make the customer happy. The other Subways should use this location as their training ground for what a Subway should be like. Located close to the center of Tienmu, they have a lot of competition from neighboring restaurants, which is why they try harder to give what you want.

Hiroshimaya Japanese Izakaya

This Japanese restaurant has a night-time aura, with their unusual lighting on the outside, and the soft lighting on the inside. It gives the place a strange mystique. The food is reasonably priced, and they even have English Menus! That is always a plus for every foreigner and encourages repeat business. For example, because of their English Menu, I eat there at least once a week. And their customer service is excellent too.

Papa Vito Pizzeria

I've tried a lot of pizza shops in Taiwan, but this one has to be the best. The thing that makes Papa Vito Pizzeria stand out is their special blend of spices and sauce, and that taste blows their competition out of the water. They really are the best in Taiwan. I've recommended their shop to many of my friends, and everyone has been equally impressed. Plus, everyone in their shop can speak English, which is another reason that foreigners should feel welcome there.

CreAfe' Coffee and Pizza

The idea of creating your own pizza from an a wide selection of toppings sounds so appealing, especially in Taiwan. However, if the sauce and spices are not made right, then it doesn't matter what toppings you have. That's the problem with CreAfe' Pizza. If you're looking for a one-time experience, then this is the place to go. It's a memorable experience. But, if you're looking for great pizza, then it's just average. Good atmosphere, friendly service, and average pizza.

Le Coin du Pain

Modern-type atmosphere with plenty of plugs for your laptop. The perfect place to spend an afternoon hanging out with friends and drinking coffee. Also, it's very clean, which is also a plus. I highly recommend this place for people looking to get out of the house, read a book, work on the computer, or to just kill a few hours.

17 Hour Breakfast Shop

It’s 2 AM and I’m starving so where do I go? To the 24 Hour Breakfast place, of course. Situated near NCCU, the 24 hour breakfast shop has a normal aura, but the customer service there is what makes the place great. I like the idea that I can get my rolled up ham and bacon fish pancakes at any hour during the night. And whenever I go there, a friendly group of employees always say hi to me. It’s very foreigner friendly. Just for service alone I give it a high rating.

MOS Burger (Muzha)

MOS burger is a popular franchise fast food restaurant in Taiwan. It is located in almost every major city. My favorite food is there rice beef burger instead of a fun do you have two rice patties with beef in the middle. This particular location in Muzha is a little boring compared to others, but there are always students there working on homework, and the place is very friendly. It's always clean.

Learn More...

KaiKai Dessert

This a great place for Dessert, but if there's a particular item you want, then get there early. Towards the evening, they let the stock run down (and try to use all their inventory), and then you can only pick what is available. And sometimes that dessert will taste less than satisfactory because it's been sitting there for a while. So, it's a great place to go in the beginning of the day, but not so great right before they close.

TGI Fridays

This is your typical American style restaurant. And the second floor of a small department store and above the Taipei bus terminal, TGI Fridays has a scenic view of Taipei 101. Very clean and well lit. The service is very friendly. A great place to hang out with friends on Friday night or weekend.

Starbucks

Good Coffee. Check. Good location. Check. Good view. Check. It has everything you're looking for in a Starbucks. It's a little small, so during the peak hours, it's almost impossible to get a table (especially if you want to use a laptop). If you're planning to meet someone to sit and talk, you might be better suited to find another coffee shop nearby. Located in: Uni president-2F-Taipei Store

The Vintage Coffee ToGo

Small little coffee shop with just a few tables. Convenient place to sit down and wait for friends. The coffee is typical, and the atmosphere is quaint. Right next to the Taipei City Hall MRT exit, so there's a lot of traffic walking by. Just an average coffee shop with one or two tables hidden away in the corner.

Out Of Office - Coffee Roastery (不在办公室)

March 26, 2021 Update: My rating has fallen dramatically. As of 3/26/2021, the shop has taken hot chocolate off the menu! Who has ever heard of a Coffee Shop that does not sell hot chocolate? It is very strange. Before March 26th review: Fantastic place to bring a laptop and just work on computer for a few hours. They have private rooms that are quite special. As for the coffee, it's just average. But, the location and atmosphere is really unique. When the say, "Out of Office", it's really an accurate description because it feels like the office break room. I really like this place. 不在办公室 Out of Office English Address: B1, No. 17-3, Section 5, Zhongxiao East Road, Taipei, Taiwan, 110 Chinese Address: 忠孝東路五段之17號之3B1, Taipei, Taiwan, 110

Cook Beef! Steak Rice Bowl

Mo-Mo Paradise

It's a popular franchise restaurant in Taipei, many locations at different shopping malls in the city. Many people love eating here, however, I find it's food rather average. If you have friends who want to meet up, this is a safe place to go because of the menu's variety. However, it's not a place I would go to alone (because the food is just average).

Thai Town Cuisine

Looking for some Chinese style Thai food in Taiwan, then this is the right place to go. Many of my friends like the food here, but having spent many years living and traveling in Thailand, I have to say that it's food is just adequate. The restaurant is a franchise and they have many locations around Taipei. It really doesn't taste like authentic Thai food. However, the atmosphere is nice, the customer service is good, and the tables are clean.

Doricious

Great place to bring a date! Very nice atmosphere and located on the 7th floor of Taipei City Hall MRT Station. The selection on the menu is wide, and the food is typical. It's not a bad place to meet up with some friends.

Sushi Take-Out

A quick place to get some cheap Sushi. It's located in the Bus Station Terminal inside of the Taipei City Hall MRT Station on the 2nd Floor. The Sushi is cheap, and you get what you pay for, but sometimes that's all you need (and want). Sometimes the customer service is terrible (that's an understatement). If you ask for extra wasabi or soy sauce, they will charge you 1 NT for each bag. Sometimes they won't even let you buy extra bags. However, for something so cheap, it's really not worth it to complain. To summarize, cheap and decent Sushi, bad service, but sometimes that's what you want (and expect).

Laya Burger

A wonderful place to visit in the morning before work. On rainy days, there is no better feeling than walking down the street and into Laya Burger to order a hot breakfast. Family owned and operated, you can feel the warmth as they cook your meal to order. They have a wide variety on the menu, and plenty of seating area for customers. But, during the peak hours, sometimes you may have to wait a few minutes before getting a table. It's clean, quiet, and really a delight eating here. Highly recommended, and very foreigner-friendly.

Garcia's Pizza in a Pan

Maybe the Best Pizza I've ever had in my life. There would be days that I would dream about this pizza in Chicago, then grab a bunch of friends, and within an hour, we would be on a two-hour road trip down south just to get a couple slices of their pizza. Sometimes, we would arrive just before closing time. I've never seen another restaurant serve pizza the way that Garcia's does. It truly is one of my top five, and maybe the best. Giordano's Pizza (Saint Charles, Illinois, USA)

Giordano's Deep Dish Pizza. Probably Top Five in the World. It's delicious. Whenever I go back to Chicago, the first day that I get of the plane is eat a Medium Size Deep Dish Pizza from Giordano's. So much Cheese, so much Sauce, so much Flavor. I am dreaming about it now. As for the restaurant, it's modestly clean, and the service is fantastic. However, sometimes I'd rather eat in the comfort of my own home, since the restaurant tables can be a little sticky (common problem in pizza restaurants). Giordano's Deep Dish Pizza... what more do I need to say? It's delicious!

TenRen's Tea

TenRen's Tea is one of the most popular Tea Franchises in Taiwan. They have locations all over the city of Taipei, along with stores in Singapore, Japan, China, Canada, and even the USA. Their tea leaves come in canisters that you can take up and brew yourself. Many of their locations are standard store fronts on major streets in the city. So, it doesn't match up to the Tea Houses in the remote mountains. However, it has a respectability that other shops don't have.

Starbucks (Muzha)

The Starbucks in Muzha has a very local flavor, and you can feel that many of their customers are from the high rises on the street. Very clean and suitable for using a laptop for hours. It's very foreigner-friendly.

McDonald’s (Muzha)

The artwork they have on the wall is very modern, and it gives the seating area a live atmosphere. Many students go here to study and do their homework. Sometimes, I come here to work on the laptop for an hour or two as well. A very local neighborhood feel to this McDonald's and it's always fairly crowded, especially during peak hours. Clean and well-lit.

Pompei Bakery

It is a Little Italy institution. My family and I have been going here for years, even to the smaller shop that used to be down the street. Everyone knows them for their square pizzas, but I love them for their calzones (Pompei Italiano). I loved this place so much (the food, the lighting, the atmosphere) that I used to bring all my friends here. It's the best pizza in Little Italy.

Learn More...

Panda Express (Saint Charles)

The best Orange Chicken in the world, and they also have awesome Walnut Shrimp. Living in Asia, I'm always looking for Orange Chicken that can match the flavor of Panda Express, and I have yet to find any restaurant that can meet the challenge. So, every time I go back to Chicago, within the first few days, I always go to Panda Express. I have dreams about the Orange Chicken (and Walnut Shrimp).

Learn More...

Noodles and Company (Saint Charles)

I hear some Pasta Fresca calling out my name. Noodles and Company has quickly gained popularity around Midwest. I've tried Noodles and Company in Chicago, and up north in Wisconsin, and one thing I've learned is that every shop has a different taste. For example, I love the Saint Charles location, but can stand the one in Wisconsin. This location has pretty good pasta. I hope they hold onto their current chef, it really makes a difference.

Learn More...

Jimmy John's (Saint Charles)

Jimmy John's Vito Italiano is the bomb! And their barbecue potato chips are one of a kind. There was a time that I could eat their sandwiches everyday, but then their delivery service quality diminished and now I only eat them 3 times a year. They are still good. And I recommend their sandwiches to everyone!

Connie's Pizza

80% of Connie's allure is their atmosphere. It's just a great place to go and eat pizza. Their pizza is unique and tastes good, but there's something about their location and restaurant atmosphere that puts it over the top. Located close to Chinatown, so you can have the main course at Connie's and get dessert in Chinatown.

Burger King (Naperville)

This old-style Burger King is located close to Naperville's Historic District. Built in the 60s, it has survived the rapid urban development of the 80s and 90s, and looks almost exactly the same as it did almost 50 years ago. It also has a river-walk directly behind the Burger King. The taste is traditional Burger King style.

Starbucks (Chicago - Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel)

A quaint little Starbucks located close the Prudential building. It's situated in the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel. Nice meeting point if you're going to Millennium Park or Michigan Avenue. The Starbucks doesn't have it's own seating, but you can sit in the Hotel's waiting area, which is very nice (and it has a long fireplace stretching across the wall, which is pretty cool).

Golden Dragon Fortune Cookies Co, Inc.

This place has been here for years and years. And the fortune cookies are so good, and I mean... really good !! Sometimes I would buy a bag and eat a whole bag while watching a Chicago Bears Football game. And we never buy just one bag, we always buy 5-10 bags for everyone in the family. These fortune cookies are so addictive!!

Ladle & Leaf (San Francisco Airport)

Ever have a Breakfast Burrito before? Over at Ladle and Leaf, inside of San Francisco Airport, they have Breakfast Burritos of all varieties. It really is filling too. When you consider the price, it is the best deal for your money. I've tried it once, and I'm already hooked! But, to be honest, it's not something I would eat everyday.

Tomokazu (San Francisco Airport)

Eating a bowl of Tempura Udon Soup from Tomokazu has become a tradition these past 10 years. They have ample seating and they are located int he International section of the airport. If you are traveling outside the US, then this is the perfect place to eat an hour before the flight. Their Udon Noodle Soup is probably the best in San Francisco airport (and I've tried them all). Always clean and the service is friendly.

My favorite thing about this Starbucks are the picture windows on the second floor. It's a sombering feeling sitting their with a laptop on rainy day, looking out at the cars and motorbikes zipping by, drinking your hot chocolate, and contemplating what the next day will bring. Starbucks is about atmosphere, cleanliness, and being able to spend hours on the computer, even if you only buy a single cup of coffee. This Starbucks has all those qualities.
